Adrian Hardesty for President of IBEW Local 551
Brothers and Sisters,
I’m running for President of IBEW Local 551 because our union is ready for leadership that is accountable and that lives and works in our jurisdiction. For too long, loyalty has been prioritized over leadership. They call it “The President’s Club.” Their motto? “We don’t like change.”

I’m a Journeyman Inside Wireman and a graduate of two apprenticeships with more than a decade of field experience. I am getting an outside perspective on the future of labor relations work through my studies at Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations. I am currently employed as a legal professional enforcing labor laws. These experiences are preparing me to be your next Business Manager by providing the tools to serve our Local with the strategic focus and transparency we need, and the integrity you deserve.
As a member of the Executive Board, I’ve seen how tightly information is controlled. The truth is, when you vote to “approve the minutes” of Executive Board meetings, you’re approving decisions you’ve never seen. Where are the newsletters? Why no member access to meeting minutes? Why don’t we have a virtual forum to ask questions, raise concerns, and build solidarity? We hold Executive Board meetings virtually, why not General Membership meetings, too?
As your President, I will try to open the doors that have been closed. I’ll advocate to make detailed financial reports, including officer salaries and political spending more accessible to every member. I’ll push for virtual meetings and real-time communication channels. I’ll advocate for member referenda on major decisions, advisory committees of rank-and-file members, and an end to the culture of secrecy and favoritism.
I will also try to begin the work of restructuring our leadership to reflect the democratic values we claim to uphold. I may not be successful in all of these priorities until I get the keys to the office, but that includes:
– Proposing amendments to bring staff salaries in line with comparable public-sector roles.
– Establishing term limits, anti-nepotism policies, and performance reviews for leadership.
– Expanding leadership development for all members
– Using more digital tools for voting, feedback, and transparent communication.
– Creating space for grassroots initiatives and independent political advocacy driven by member priorities—not political alliances or personal ambition.
I won’t be running for Business Manager from the sidelines. I’ll earn it by serving you—honestly, transparently, and in full view. The next three years are critical for setting a new tone and direction for Local 551. As President, I’ll make it my mission to break down the barriers that have kept members in the dark and held our Local back.
If you’re ready for change, then I ask for your support. Let’s move from a Yes Man culture to a Union of real leadership.
In solidarity,
Adrian Hardesty
Candidate for President, IBEW Local 551
